About Me
Hello, my name is Gary (Scouting Bear). I have had many people ask what I do in scouting so I felt it was time to add a little something about myself.
I have a 23 year old son who joined scouting when he was in second grade (a Wolf). His first Pack was newly started with 8 boys in Fayetteville, NC. Two years later there were over 50 boys and from what I have heard, it got so big they split and made two packs. My wife was his den leader and I took over as his Webelos leader. He made Eagle Scout at 14, worked at scouting summer camp.
I have held the following unit positions at one time or another, Pack Historian, Pack Committee Chair, Troop Treasurer, Assistant Scoutmaster and Troop Committee member.
I have also been active outside units. As a trainer, I have taught at most of the Cub Scout training's including, Basic, CLOE, Webelos Leader Outdoor and Pow Wow. I have also taught at TTT, College of Commissioner Science and was on Cub Roundtable staff for 3 years. My wife and I also had the honor to co-chair our council's Pow Wow in 1995.
I have been an ADC and District Commissioner and I currently hold the position of Unit Commissioner in Black Mountain District, Desert Pacific Council (San Diego, Ca to El Centro, Ca.) with 114 units in my district. I find commissioning very rewarding as I get to work with adult leaders and boys.
I believe trained leaders usually mean better leaders so I have taken many different scout training's. I have been to three training's which I consider highlights. I have been to Philmont twice for training and I attended Cub Woodbadge W-CS-34 (I used to be a Bear---). One of my dreams is to be selected to serve on Woodbadge staff or as a training staff member at Philmont.
My wife, Drucie (an Antelope), is also very active in scouting. She as the Cub Roundtable Commissioner for three years. She also ran the God and Country program at our church.
Some of my interests outside of scouting include cooking, soccer, metal detecting and I like to take pictures.
So now you know more about me than you probably wanted to know.
We are truly a scouting family.
