THE VIKING VOYAGE



Divide the group into five smaller groups and assign each group one of the words listed below. Read the story. After each of the words is read pause for the group to make the appropriate response.

VIKINGS "Brave and daring, brave and daring!"
THOR "Straighten them horns, straighten them horns!"
GREAT SHIP "Watch out, watch out!"
PORT ROYAL "Land ho, land ho!"
SAILING or SAILS "Oh, my aching back!"


Long, long ago, before any of you were born, on a distant island called Tortuga, there lived a brave and daring group of people known as VIKINGS___. These VIKINGS___ were noted for their ability as seamen and SAILING___ their GREAT SHIPS___.

One day the VIKINGS___ led by THOR___ decided to set out on a perilous journey to find a new home on PORT ROYAL___. The VIKINGS___ loaded their GREAT SHIP___ with supplies and started SAILING___ toward PORT ROYAL___.

For many days and nights, the GREAT SHIPS___ rolled and pitched through the stormy waters. The great VIKINGS___ SAILED___ dangerously close to the reefs. Each time THOR___ daringly steered his GREAT SHIP___ and lead his little band of VIKINGS___ past the danger. Working the SAILS___ fast and furiously, they managed to keep the GREAT SHIP___ safe.

Finally, after weeks of SAILING___ through the stormy seas and past all those treacherous reefs, the daring VIKINGS___ led by THOR___ in their GREAT SHIP___ sighted PORT ROYAL___. With great skill, the VIKINGS___ continued SAILING___ until they happened onto the shores of PORT ROYAL___.

"No more dried fish!" cheered the VIKINGS___. "No more SAILING___!" cheered THOR___. "No more reef the GREAT SHIP___ had to get by!"

Everyone was happy to be in PORT ROYAL___. And that is the story of how THOR___ and the VIKINGS___ SAILED___ their GREAT SHIP___ through the dangerous reefs to a new home at PORT ROYAL___.
