THE GRAND FIESTA



Divide the group into four smaller groups and assign each group one of the words listed below. Read the story. After each of the words is read pause for the group to make the appropriate response.
FIESTA "Ole, Ole!"
MEXICAN (s) "Si si, Si si!"
ROCKET "Zoooo-oom!"
CASTILLO "Ahhhhhh!"

Today is the grand CASTILLO____, a special FIESTA____ day in the village. It is the day that the village honors its patron saint, as does every MEXICAN____ village once each year.

In the afternoon, there is a parade up and down the streets. At night the most important part of the FIESTA____ takes place. All day long everyone waits impatiently for the CASTILLO____.

CASTILLO____ really means castle. To the MEXICANS____ it means a special kind of fireworks display that is a part of almost every MEXICAN____ FIESTA____. Men have fastened ROCKETS____ and pinwheels to a light framework, which is shaped like a castle. All of the MEXICANS____ in the village contribute money to buy this CASTILLO____.

When it begins to grown dark, the people crowd around. The band plays. The boys and girls wear costumes. At last someone steps forward and lights a ROCKET____ near the bottom of the CASTILLO____. It sputters, then zooms high into the air to burst with a wonderful display of red and green light. The pinwheel catches fire and whirls round and round, sending out showers of white sparks. Then, the next ROCKET____ goes off, and the next pinwheel. One after another all the ROCKETS____ zoom into the sky. Then darkness settles. The CASTILLO____ has burned out.

The band plays again and everyone buys refreshments. Nobody is in a hurry. They have had a great CASTILLO____ tonight and later they will have another, with eight stories. That CASTILLO____ will last a long time.

At last the FIESTA____ is over. There will be another FIESTA____ soon. All the MEXICANS____ work hard, but they know it is not good to work all of the time. They know that FIESTAS____ are important, too. One MEXICAN____ says: "To save money with no purpose is foolish. But to save money for a new tractor or for a FIESTA____, that is wise."
